Ever since I have heard Rebecca Clarke's Morpheus, my interest in writing for string instruments was piqued. I have since composed string quartets, a string trio, a piano trio, and a cello sonata. But this time I am focusing entirely on the dark and elegant sound of viola as a solo instrument with piano accompaniment. A bit livelier than Morpheus, my composition alludes to some of its themes and pays homage to it, yet establishes its own musical landscape.
